Agasthyakoodam: Trek to the Abode of Sage Agastya Guide
Agasthyakoodam Peak, also known as Agastya Mala, is a majestic peak in the Western Ghats, located near Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India. Standing at a height of 1,868 meters (6,129 feet), it is the second highest peak in Kerala and a part of the Agasthyamalai Biosphere Reserve. This peak is not just a natural wonder but also holds significant cultural and historical importance. The peak is named after Sage Agastya, a revered figure in Hindu mythology, believed to have resided here. The region is known for its rich biodiversity, including rare medicinal plants and diverse flora and fauna. The trek to Agasthyakoodam is considered challenging and requires prior permission from the Kerala Forest Department. The peak is also a pilgrimage site for Hindus, who believe that Sage Agastya still resides there in a spiritual form. The primary activity at Agasthyakoodam is trekking. The trek usually takes two days and requires a good level of physical fitness. The journey takes you through dense forests, grasslands, and rocky terrain, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. The peak is also a haven for birdwatchers, with numerous species of birds inhabiting the area. Remember to carry sufficient water, food, and appropriate trekking gear. Due to the sensitive ecosystem, plastic and other pollutants are strictly prohibited.
Transportation
The base camp for the Agasthyakoodam trek is at Bonacaud. To reach Bonacaud, you can take a KSRTC bus from Thiruvananthapuram city. Buses are available from the Thampanoor bus station. Alternatively, you can hire a taxi or auto-rickshaw from Thiruvananthapuram to Bonacaud. From Bonacaud, you need to obtain permission from the Forest Department and begin the trek. Note that trekking permits are limited and need to be booked in advance.
